The Case for Restructuring the Relationship Between Research and Practice: 2003 and 2023

We will create the context for the day by revisiting the arguments made in the National Research Council Report for an enterprise that would support the kind of continuous innovation and improvement in education that we see in many other sectors—one that would allow research to be conducted on problems of practice, with practitioners, in practice settings.

Learning From Practice: How to Move From Effective Practice to Scalable Solutions

In this session, we will explore work with the D.C. Public Schools to identify differences in literacy outcomes among classrooms with students who share demographic characteristics. How can we explain the substantial variation in outcomes, and can what we learn be used to improve practice in lower-performing classrooms?

Taking Effective Solutions to Scale

Innovations that have evidence of effectiveness often require years of “following the contours of the problem” before they are ready for scaling. This session will look at the process involved in taking STARI from a scrappy program tested out by three teachers, to a professionally designed program that spans three full years and is now being used in classrooms across the country.

If you are taking public transit, the Keck Center is around the corner from Judiciary Square (red line), a block and a half from Gallery Place (green & yellow lines), and five blocks from Metro Center (orange & blue lines).
