Session I.
The Case for Restructuring the Relationship Between Research and Practice: 2003 and 2023
We will create the context for the day by revisiting the arguments made in the National Research Council Report for an enterprise that would support the kind of continuous innovation and improvement in education that we see in many other sectors—one that would allow research to be conducted on problems of practice, with practitioners, in practice settings.
Panelists:
Liz Albro
Commissioner, National Center for Education Research - Institute of Education Sciences - U.S. Department of Education
11:00 AM - 12:15 PM
Session II.
Research and Development in Pasteur’s Quadrant
The two panels in this session will explore research-based solutions that are designed within very tight constraints of practice, calling attention to the essential role of user-centered design, and to the complexity of designing to meet the needs of multiple users: students, teachers, and administrators.
A. Worked Examples and Self-explanation

Session III.
Learning From Practice: How to Move From Effective Practice to Scalable Solutions
In this session, we will explore work with the D.C. Public Schools to identify differences in literacy outcomes among classrooms with students who share demographic characteristics. How can we explain the substantial variation in outcomes, and can what we learn be used to improve practice in lower-performing classrooms?
Panelists:
Nicole Patton Terry
Professor of Education - Florida State University • Director of Florida Center for Reading Research
3:15 - 4:00 PM
Session IV.
Taking Effective Solutions to Scale
Innovations that have evidence of effectiveness often require years of “following the contours of the problem” before they are ready for scaling. This session will look at the process involved in taking STARI from a scrappy program tested out by three teachers, to a professionally designed program that spans three full years and is now being used in classrooms across the country.
Panelists:
4:10 - 4:50 PM
Session V.
Looking to the Future: A Coherent Infrastructure or 1,000 Flowers Blooming?
In this session, we will ask education leaders from the foundations that funded SERP’s start-up to reflect on the work to date, and implications for future investments.
