Lowry Hemphill is a former secondary-level reading specialist whose teaching and research focus on the relationship between oral language and literacy. Her research has explored both child-level factors that affect reading outcomes and classroom and social factors that contribute to academic success for larger groups of students. In 2007 she was recognized with the International Reading Association’s Dina Feitelson Award for work assessing Boston’s progress with literacy reform. She served as Co-PI on the Reading for Understanding project and led the development of STARI curriculum and training.
