Tips for scheduling STARI

Recommendations for class size, frequency, and length

A class size of 12-14 students is ideal for STARI. Some of our successful classes have been larger, but the teacher should have very good classroom management skills that will also allow for some independent, pair, and small group work. We recommend that classes have at least four students, to allow for a contrast between partner work and whole-group work.

STARI is intended to be a “double dose” intervention that should not take the place of core curriculum (Can STARI take the place of ELA?). Our data show that students who are able to get through the full three units of a STARI series make the most growth. Scheduling sufficient time for STARI is essential in order for students to make maximum progress.

Schools are asked to devote at least:

  • 45 minutes, 5 days a week, or
  • 90 minutes on an A-day/B-day schedule

Recommendations for identifying a teacher for STARI

Most STARI teachers have certification or background in reading, but many also have special education, ELL, or ELA training and experience. The curriculum is narrative and outlines activities step by step, but it is also layered and complex. The professional learning series provides detailed guidance around every component of the curriculum. While it is helpful for teachers to have some background in teaching reading, it is more important to select a teacher with excellent classroom management skills, a growth mindset, and a willingness to take on the challenge of learning a new curriculum.
