SERP designers:
  • develop a thorough understanding of the people who will be served by products;
  • study real-life contexts where products will be used;
  • engage in iterative design cycles with researchers and practitioners drawing on in-house talent in video production, animation, illustration, web/print publishing, and instructional design;
  • refine materials after testing;
  • design for easy uptake in a broad range of settings.
The interplay of materials with learning and teaching is complex, so SERP employs designers who have previously worked as teachers in order to gain an unusual level of insight into the day-to-day happenings in schools and how prototypes affect a classroom dynamic. But SERP designers do not rely only on their training and experience; they systematically seek out feedback from both researchers and practitioners. Most importantly, they strive to create clear, convenient, and sensible options for teachers so time and resources are preserved for what they most want to do... engage with students!
